Guiding Students Into the Exciting World of AI and Data Science

Rashmi Laxmikant Malghan is not just an accomplished academic; she is a passionate educator committed to inspiring her students and preparing them to navigate both established and emerging technology. With a Ph.D. in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning along with 6 years of teaching experience, she has dedicated her career to subjects such as AI, big data and data analytics, and machine learning. Currently serving as an Assistant Professor at the Manipal Institute of Technology, on the west coast of India, Rashmi is using her expertise in data science and neural networks to bring AI into the classroom.

According to Rashmi, her mission today is to ensure that students go beyond simply absorbing knowledge and actually apply the knowledge to become technology problem-solvers. “By embracing AI, students can enhance their skill sets, broaden their career horizons, and tackle real-world challenges,” she states. She believes that AI is not just a subject to learn but a gateway to endless opportunities.

When considering the impact of extracurricular learning options for her students, Rashmi reports seeing significant improvements in her teaching philosophy through her engagement with IBM SkillsBuild. “As a data science faculty handling subjects like AI, big data and data analytics, IBM SkillsBuild has greatly enhanced my ability to engage students. It has allowed me to bring real-world, industry-relevant skills into the classroom,” she explains. The hands-on approach connects theoretical concepts to real-world applications, preparing Rashmi’s students to thrive in competitive job markets.

But Rashmi’s students are not the only ones being powered by AI. In her daily routine, she affirms she also actively utilizes AI techniques in her research projects, employing machine learning and data mining to explore innovative solutions and advancements in her field. “I utilize AI-based tools to curate and recommend relevant articles, research papers, and news in AI and data science to keep me informed about the latest trends and developments,” she explains.

When envisioning and predicting the future, Rashmi believes that virtual assistants have great potential to enhance student engagement and personalize learning experiences. “AI has the potential to make learning more accessible and interactive,” she emphasizes, highlighting the importance of partnerships between educators and industry professionals to improve student outcomes. For Rashmi, “Collaboration fosters innovation, and this allows us educators to unlock new possibilities for teaching methodologies.”
